Second Sunday of Advent, Year C

Call to Worship

Leader: Attention! Listen up! Get ready! Repent!

People: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

Leader: All flesh shall see the salvation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People: We are to be ready always for Christ’s entry into our lives.

Invocation

Spirit of the Most High’s Prophet, use the Good News to refine us, purify us, that we may be ready for Christ coming to us. In his name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Christ came into the world, Christ will come again, Christ comes to us now.

People: We ready ourselves with repentance, remembering our baptism.

Leader: We recall our sins.

People: We focus too much on presents and not enough on the Presence.

Leader: We either panic about the Second Coming or are indifferent to it, instead of purifying ourselves by the Spirit’s power, full of joyful expectation.

People: We fail to make paths straight, open to the Lord.

Leader: For Emmanuel’s sake, forgive us, God.

People: Clean us up. Scrub us. Renew us. So be it.

Words of Assurance

Leader: Christ’s blood has washed you clean. Christ’s suffering has burned you pure. Christ has straightened you holy. All your sins have been forgiven. We are the baptized, the washed.

People: Thanks be to God.

Prayer of Inspiration

Through this sermon may we experience anew you coming to us to set us free.

Prayers of the People

Benedictus-Lord, you have led the Church to repentance. Over and over have you sent the Messiah to us. We offer forte praise for Nicholas, bishop of Myra, and Ambrose, bishop of Milan. Lead us always to respond to your coming by giving to the poor. Blessings to you (congregational response: who have set us free.).

We glorify you for your astonishing servant John the Baptist. We find fascinating his bold radicality. Make us bold to share loving mercy with a harsh and condemning world. Blessings to you . . .

You are superior to all rulers, from Tiberius to Caiaphas. We thank you for the nations of the world. Guide leaders and citizens of every language, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and skin color to end war and make roads straight for peace. Blessings to you . . .

The holydays can be heavy with grief. Compel us to comfort the bereaved, imprisoned, and lonely. Heal those of us who are among the bereaved, imprisoned, or lonely. Blessings to you . . .

The nights are longer, the air is sharper. Many are especially vulnerable. Heal all in need, including those we mention now. [Add names.] Blessings to you . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Benedictus-Lord, you have come to us and set us free. We exalt you for hearing us and coming to us. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

By Christ’s sacrifice we are able to present this offering, knowing that it will be pleasing to you.

Benediction

Leader: The Three-in-One, Father, Son, and Spirit, has empowered you to be John the Baptist for a world in need of renewal.

People: We leave to embody God’s scouring, reviving, healing power.

First Sunday of Advent, Year C

Call to Worship

Leader: The days are surely coming

People: when the Lord will fulfill all his promises.

Leader: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be alert at all times,

People: trusting in the strength that comes from the Son of Man.

Invocation

Advent-Adonai, you are with us always, even to the end of the age. Open our eyes to your agapic presence. So be it.

Prayer of Confession

To you, O LORD, we lift up our souls. Instruct us sinners in your way. We live carelessly, without regard for the sacredness of time. We are busy sleeping, wasting our lives, or we are obsessive compulsive about the Second Coming, interpreting every thunderstorm as a sign of doom.

For your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon our guilt, for it is great. In the name of the Triple-Coming Christ, forgive us. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Christ is here! The LORD relieves the troubles of our hearts. God forgives us all our sins, every single one. May our integrity and uprightness preserve us, for we wait for God.

Prayer of Inspiration

Fig Tree-Spirit, prepare us for the coming of Christ through the sermon.

Prayers of the People

God-With-Us, you have supported the Church throughout the centuries. We offer extra gratitude for Andrew the apostle. We praise you for missionaries such as Francis Xavier and theologians and hymnwriters such as John of Damascus. Let integrity and uprightness preserve us, (congregational response: for our hope has been in you.).

God-With-Us, you have given our nation cornucopious riches. Care for President Obama, Congress, the Supreme Court, and all our leaders, so that we use these riches for the healing of the nations and not for selfishness. We lift up our souls to you, . . .

God-With-Us, we exalt you for good family and other loved ones. During the holydays, inspire us to lay aside dysfunction. Keep us safe in travel. May this be a season of healing fellowship. We lift our souls to you, . . .

God-With-Us, the holydays are painful for many. There is much grief, loneliness, and poverty. Compel us to care for those in need in substantial ways that make a difference. We lift our souls to you, . . .

God-With-Us, you have filled us with healing. Heal the suffering, including those we mention now. [Add names]. Let integrity and uprightness preserve us, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

These prayers are for you, in the name of the Advent-Messiah. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We come to you with this offering in accord with your truth.

Benediction

Leader: Trinity-Yahweh, Father, Son, and Spirit, even when the sun, moon, and stars collapse,

People: you are still our salvation.

Leader: We leave worship

People: ever vigilant to your arrival.

Reign of Christ, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: We bow to the Sovereign who serves the subjects through sacrifice,

People: summoning us to do the same.

Leader: Today, at year’s end, we worship in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People: From year to year our hearts kneel before Jesus on the Cross-Throne.

Invocation

A-and-Z Spirit, fill us up to drop our pride before the One who reigns over all, in whose name we pray. So be it.

Prayer of Confession

Ruler of All, we have failed you. We are poor subjects, ever sinful, rebellious against you. We do not trust your might. We think Satan is a more powerful ruler. We put our trust in human powers, not in you. We worship the glittering, sexy, and militarily strong, forgetting that true strength lies in cruciform weakness. By your healing love, forgive us. Teach us to be loyal subjects. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Christ the King has paid the ransom, has rescued us from the tyranny of Satan. Christ has forgiven all your sins. At the end of the year, Christ makes you new. You are reborn. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Ruach, teach us through the Word to obey the Son of Man.

Prayers of the People

Love-Monarch, we exalt you for your rule over the Church. You have given us insightful leaders such as Clement of Rome and William Passavant, and hymn-writers such as Isaac Watts. Conduct us to sing according to your harmony. Your hear us. (congregational response: You help us.).

Love-Monarch, we thank you for the United States of America, including President Obama, Congress, and the Supreme Court. Tutor all leaders in healing wisdom. Embolden us to bring peace in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan. You hear us . . .

Love-Monarch, we praise you for John F. Kennedy. He was eloquent, inspiring, wise, and hopeful. Reverently we remember his death and strive to imitate his strengths. You hear us . . .

Love-Monarch, you have given us a church year of blessings, including opportunities to help people in need. Carry us into the new year to be people of hope and expectation who live according to your agapic power. You hear us . . .

Love-Monarch, you have knighted us with healing. Heal those in need, including all we mention now in our hearts or with our voices [Add names]. You hear us . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We have laid our prayers at your crucified feet, knowing that you hear all prayers and always answer according to your purpose. In your name we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

As wise men and women we place this offering before your throne, trusting in you alone.

Benediction

Leader: King of kings, Queen of queens, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you have cared for us,

People: so we can venture into the new year to bring the kingdom to all. So be it.

Proper 28

Ordinary 33, Pentecost 24

Call to Worship

Leader: Over and over the world ends, and we become afraid.

People: God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is with us even when the building collapses.

Leader: When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed;

People: We are to beware that no one leads us astray, and we are to provoke one another to love and good deeds.

Invocation

Holy Spirit, you fill us with courage to face the troubles of the times. Nourish us through this worship service, so that we can be steadfast in loving unity every single day. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Lord of Kairos, you have sent Christ to offer for all time a single sacrifice for sins. We continue to let you down. We obsess over the endtimes, full of anxiety instead of confidence in you. We dread the end, ignoring the new beginnings that you grow out of it. We neglect to meet together and fail to provoke one another to love and good deeds. We tend to beat each other down instead of encouraging each other.

For the sake of the Melchizedek-Messiah, forgive us. Sprinkle us clean. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Christ the Lamb-Priest has washed us clean of all sin. Christ gives you a new beginning, recreates you through forgiveness of your sins. God remembers our sins and lawless deeds no more. We get to start over. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Just as you have guided Michael, guide us now through the sermon. So be it.

Prayers of the People

Resurrection-Lord, you rebuild the Church over and over, from age to age. We exalt you for Elizabeth of Hungary and other renewers of society. Use us for renewal, full of courage anchored in faith in you. O God, (congregational response: you show us the path of life.).

Resurrection-Lord, legions of people fail to attend church regularly. Help us to encourage one another to meet. O God, . . .

Resurrection-Lord, you have molded our nation with blessings. Sculpt us to join with other nations according to your will, not turn against them. Give wisdom to the Senate as it deliberates over health care reform. O God, . . .

Resurrection-Lord, you have healed us, renewed us in many and various ways. Renew people in need now, including those we mention in our hearts or with our mouths. [Add names]. O God, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Resurrection-Lord, we hand you our prayers, our hearts glad and our spirits rejoicing; our bodies rest in hope. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Birth Pang-God, we give you this offering, knowing that you are making all things new.

Benediction

Leader: Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we leave to provoke one another to love and good deeds,

People: and we promise to continue to meet together and encourage each other, and all the more when the Day is approaching.

Proper 27

Ordinary 32, Pentecost 23

Call to Worship

Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in whose name we gather,

People: spreads special care before the widows.

Leader: In the Bible, the widows are those who are oppressed, neglected, forgotten, tossed aside,

People: even though God’s heart breaks for them.

Leader: God challenges us to care for the stepped-over and stepped-on.

People: God has picked us up so we can pick up others.

Invocation

Praise-Ruach, you have filled us with might to care for widows. Strengthen us through this service to grow in compassion. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Christ, you are the final scapegoat, the ultimate sacrifice to save us from sin forever, but we persist in sin. We fail to care for people in need, widows of all types. We also tend to overlook them. They give all they have, but we are too busy promoting ourselves to notice. The poor beg for help, but we make excuses to take advantage of them.

By your blood, forgive us once again. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Alleluia! Christ the Lamb-Priest has made the sacrifice for our sins. All your sins are forgiven. Let us show our gratitude by caring for those in need. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Spirit-Yah, teach us compassion through the Word. Yes.

Prayers of the People

Mercy-God, you have enabled the Church to care for widows and other people in need across the ages. Continue to teach us to care for the underprivileged and to celebrate the good they do. Lord, (congregational response: you lift us up.).

Adonai, we thank you for great leaders such as Martin Luther, who was born on November 10. Help us to imitate their strengths. Lord, . . .

God of Almighty Generosity, we thank you for veterans who have made great sacrifices for the sake of protecting our nation and helping people in need. Guide us to take proper care of veterans. Lead us all to the day when we no longer fight wars. Lord, . . .

Agape-Sovereign, you have given our nation many strengths and riches. Embolden us to care always for the world’s widows, regardless of nationality, color, or religion. Lord, . . .

Healer, you have taken us by the hand and called us to wholeness. Bring healing to all in need, including those we mention in our hearts or aloud. [Add names.] Lord, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We put these prayers into the treasury, entrusting to you all we have. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Teach us, O Lord, to put in everything we have.

Benediction

Leader: God bless you, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Serve the widow.

People: We shall care for the poor.
