Proper 26, Ordinary 31

All Saints Sunday

Call to Worship

Leader: Christ calls to us, “Come out!”

People: Christ calls to us, “Unbind each other, and let each other go.”

Leader: We remember our loved ones whom Christ has transported to eternal life.

People: We give thanks for our baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Leader: God has canonized us, not based on our merits, but based on the King of glory.

People: The Trinity is wiping every tear from our eyes.

Invocation

Wisdom-Spirit, you clear our vision so we can see God making all things new. Teach us to be Christ’s voice shouting to one another, “Lazarus, come out!” In the name of the Lamb-Lord we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

God of the Future in the present, although we are the communion of saints, we are also a circus of sinners. We cling to death, hiding in tombs that we have carved out of fear and stubbornness, ignoring your call to come out. We fail to unbind each other from oppression, poverty, and abuse. You lay a feast before us, but we are already full from devil’s food. We strive to fill the inner void with selfishness and wonder why we are still starving. We are convinced that our best days are behind us, not believing that you are making all things new.

For the sake of the Lamb, forgive us. Dry our tears. Show us the light that we fail to see. Lead us out of the cave. Yes. Please.

Words of Assurance

Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen!

People: The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Leader: Christ calls us from death to life. Your sins are no more.

People: God is making all things new, including us.

Leader: We receive blessing from the God of our salvation. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Sophia-Wind, through this sermon, fill us with the life-leading wisdom of the Word.

Prayers of the People

Intimate-Lord, through baptism into Christ, you have transformed us into the communion of saints. You assure us that we have eternal life in the New Jerusalem and that you are, even now, making all things new. From our hearts we offer gratitude for our loved ones who now live in heaven, including [Add names]. Alpha and Omega, (congregational response: you hear your holy ones.).

God of Theo-Odyssey, often we fail to understand why things happen the way they do. Life is unfair. Frequently we are angry with you. We have many questions; you provide few answers. Our doubt is sometimes swollen. Reteach us continually that your shoulders can accommodate our anger and doubt; that, when we grieve, you grieve; and that, because you are with us, we are home. Alpha and Omega, . . .

LORD of hosts, you have baptized us to Christ. We are holy and immortal because of you. Tutor us to live according to our baptism. Alpha and Omega, . . . .

Legions of us are stuck in a tomb of our own making. We insist on remaining wrapped in defeat. Grant us the courage to emerge and to unbind one another. Alpha and Omega, . . .

King of glory, we thank you for the freedom to vote. Sanctify Election Day, that it may serve your will. Call people forth from the tombs of apathy, cynicism, and excuse-making. Lead leaders out of the tomb of corruption and dysfunction toward pure, productive unity. Alpha and Omega, . . .

Joyous Light of Glory, we praise your for time and sunlight. Bless us as we make the transition to Daylight Savings Time. May every second serve you, including through helping those in need. Alpha and Omega, . . .

Over and over you dry our eyes with healing. Bring healing to those in need now, including those we mention: [Add names]. Teach us to heal with words and actions. Alpha and Omega, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

You are here and, with compassion, you hear. We believe, so we know that we will see your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We lift up our heads and present this offering with holy hands and hearts, confident that you will use it for tear-drying renewal.

Benediction

Leader: The Three-in-One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has washed us, filled us, canonized us.

People: As the communion of saints, we leave here to call Lazarus to life by the power of the crucified and risen Savior. Alleluia!

Proper 25, Ordinary 30

Pentecost 21

Call to Worship

Leader: We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

People: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Leader: The liberating truth is Jesus Christ.

People: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Leader: We are freed to be slaves to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Invocation

Spirit of the Angel-Armies, you have made possible in our hearts faith in Christ’s saving grace. Lead us at this hour to be still and not just know about God, but know God. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Liberation God, you have justified us by grace through faith. We all have sinned and fall short of your glory. We are quick to judge others, but we ourselves are guilty, as well. We boast about our credentials and works, as if they save us. We are so busy competing and bickering that we do not hear the Good News. We cheat on you, our spouse. We think truth is about right doctrine more than it is about your love for us and our responding love for you.

For the sake of Rescuing-Christ, forgive us. Remember our sins no more. Amen.

Words of Assurance

God our Strength has busted us out of the Hell-prison, has broken us out of Sin-Sin. The Lord put Christ forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. All your sins: forgotten. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Spirit, through the sermon show us truth.

Prayers of the People

Creative Lord, you reform the Church as the need arises. We praise you for Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, Ignatius Loyola, and other reformers. Endow us with courageous, cruciform creativity to shape the Church according to your love. God of Jacob, (congregational response: you are our stronghold.).

Adonai of Truth, we exalt you for the blessings of our nation. Guide it and leaders and citizens around the planet. Teach us to be still and know you. God of Jacob, . . .

Supreme Musician, we thank you for great hymnists, including Philipp Nicolai, Johann Heermann, and Paul Gerhardt. Teach us to make music embodying the Good News. God of Jacob, . .

You are mightier than evil, stronger than our fears. We enjoy Halloween with confidence in your healing, protective love. Keep us safe as we have fun. May we always worship you alone and reject the Devil. God of Jacob, . . .

You have healed us in many ways. Bring healing to people in need, including these we mention in our hearts or aloud right now: [Add names.]. God of Jacob, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We entrust these prayers to your care, confident that you will respond in liberating ways. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We present this cornucopia to you as part of knowing you, Truth.

Benediction

Leader: Saving God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has redeemed you, has freed you, and is with you.

People: We serve people in need, confident that, because of Christ alone, the kingdom is ours forever.

Proper 24, Ordinary 29

Pentecost 20

Call to Worship

Leader: We are so busy competing to be number one,

People: but Jesus calls us not to be served but to serve.

Leader: We push people aside so we can climb the ladder

People: and end up falling to the ground.

Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, serves us, the undeserving.

People: We respond by serving the Trinity, including through serving people in need.

Invocation

Lord, you are our refuge, our habitation. Sanctify our worship service, so that it may be a tool of glorifying the great high priest, especially by being an instrument of healing for a sin-sick world. In the name of the Melchizedek-Messiah we pray. Amen.

Confession

Obedient Christ, you put us before yourself, but we put ourselves before you. We want all the glory but none of the sacrifice. We compete with each other over who is first, who is the best, who should be boss. We play the servant, not to serve truly, but with the secret hope for reward. We subject you to foolish tests. We demand that you obey us but do not believe that we have to obey you.

For the sake of the Priest-Lamb, forgive us. Give us another chance yet again. We cling to you; deliver us. So be it. Please.

Words of Assurance

The one who learned obedience through what he suffered has saved us from enslavement to sin and Satan. God bears us up so that we will never dash our foot against brimstone. God satisfies us with eternal life and shows us the Lord’s salvation. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Spirit, through preaching blow into us the Word-wisdom.

Prayers of the People

Thank you, God, for the Church entire, for all the baptized, including that poet Luke and that leader James of Jerusalem. Teach us what it means to be first. Servant-God, (heal us with your mercy.).

Thank you, God, for the world entire, for humanity’s diversity, for the riches that you have entrusted to our nation to use in loving the neighbor, all six-billion plus of them. Servant-God, . . .

Thank you, God, for your humbling wisdom entire. Teach us to stop sweating and shoving to be number one but to labor to be last. Rid us of empire-mentality, might makes right thinking, and focus on making the oppressed the winners. Servant-God, . . .

Thank you, God, for calling us to care for the world entire. You have blessed us with healing. Humble us to be a healing blessing to all. Bring healing to those in need now, including these we mention in our hearts or aloud at this moment. [Add names.] Servant-God, . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Without ceasing do we praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, knowing that you care for us more than we care for ourselves. In the name of the Obedient King we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We place ourselves last, laying these treasures before you for the care of all in need.

Benediction

Leader: The Three-in-One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has empowered you, has lifted you up, has called you to selflessness.

People: We leave here, God with us, having liberated us to be last.

Proper 23, Ordinary 28

Pentecost 19

Call to Worship

Leader: The world loves riches, and so does the Devil.

People: If we rely on our riches or our works to get into heaven, we will never even squeeze in.

Leader: Thanks be to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the sacrifice of the High Priest.

People: Christ sacrificed himself to save us.

Leader: For us, salvation is impossible.

People: For God, all things are possible.

Invocation

Good Teacher, you look at us with love. We exalt you for saving us. Teach us what it means for us to sell what we own, give the money to the poor, and follow you. In your name we pray. Amen.

Confession

Lord of the Sword-Word, we thank you for showing us mercy. Every day we sin against you. We are lax with our wealth, not giving the poor adequate help but just enough to appease our consciences. We are unwilling to invest everything into you. We think eternal life is something to buy or earn instead of something that you give us through mercy. We are eager to blame you for our problems but reluctant to praise you for helping us. We mean to number our days but then forget and doze off until the next wake-up call. We shove to be first, not realizing that we have shoved ourselves to the end of the line.

Leader: Out of the mercy of the High Priest-Lamb, forgive us our sins.

People: We approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Words of Assurance

Leader: For mortals, salvation is impossible, but not for God;

People: for God all things are possible.

Leader: The High Priest sacrificed himself for our salvation.

People: Through Christ, you have forgiveness of sins.

Leader: Through Christ, you have forgiveness of sins. Alleluia!

People: Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

We run up, kneel before you, and ask you to teach us the Good News. Teach us to be last.

Prayers of the People

All-knowing Lord, we praise you for great discoveries. Teach us to use them to show our love for you, including by loving others. Alpha and Omega, (congregational response: we seek good and not evil.).

Priest-Lamb, you have strengthened the Church with uplifting servants, including Teresa of Avila and Ignatius of Antioch. Remind us of our baptismal call to give up all for your sake. Alpha and Omega, . . .

God of camel and needle’s eye, we thank you for the riches with which you have blessed our nation. Teach us to share this wealth with all in need. We are quick to hoard. Tutor us to be quicker to help. Alpha and Omega, . . .

We exalt you for Canada. Bless that nation as its citizens celebrate Thanksgiving Day. May every single one of us remember to be grateful without ceasing. Alpha and Omega, . . .

Countless people suffer. Embolden us to work harder to care for earthquake and tsunami victims. Make us wiser agents for peace with Iran and other troubling nations. Bring an end to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Use us as instruments of justice and healing for the Darfur. Alpha and Omega, . . .

God of the Ominloving Gaze, you bring healing every day. Bring healing to those in need, including these people we mention in our hearts our out loud at this time. [Add names]. Alpha and Omega, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We seek you and live. We thank you for hearing and helping us. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We present this offering. Make us prudent stewards, that we may never push aside the needy in the gate.

Benediction

Leader: Trinity-Yahweh, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, loves you and shows you mercy.

People: We live to give away everything we have, not to inherit eternal life, but because we are already heirs. Alleluia!

Proper 22, Ordinary 27

Pentecost 18

Call to Worship

Leader: What God has joined together

People: let no one separate.

Leader: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit has welcomed us;

People: Christ has made our relationships new.

Leader: We answer the call as little children,

People: and our savior takes us in his arms, lays holey hands on us, and blesses us.

Invocation

We praise you, God, for positioning us just a little lower than you, even though we are unworthy. Make us wise stewards of creation and our relationships. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray by the power of the Spirit. Amen.

Confession

O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. We beseech you for mercy. We are neglectful and abusive toward creation. We think we are above you when really we are beneath you. At other times, we fail to live up to the honor that you have bestowed on us. We are careless with our relationships, quick to give up on each other. We talk about caring for children and then disregard them. We stare at angels while barely glancing at you. We are cynical and childish instead of trusting and childlike in our faith.

For the sake of Jesus Christ, the Son, forgive us. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Alleluia! Christ became temporarily lower than the angels so he could taste death for everyone. Jesus has made purification for every single one of your sins. God’s hands are on you, blessing you. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Advocate, lift our drooping hands and knees. Through the proclamation of the Word, recommit us to our union with you and one another. In the name of the Melchizedek-Messiah we pray. Amen.

Prayers of the People

Creator, we glorify you for the magnificence of creation. We have made progress to take better care of it. Magnify our wisdom so that we are even better stewards. We cling to you, (congregational response: knowing you cling to us.).

Redeemer, the Church has been strong because of you. You have given us great leaders such as Francis of Assisi. Humble all of us baptized to be more like Francis. Make us instruments of your peace. We cling to you, . . .

Sanctifier, you have endowed our nation with many blessings. Lead us, including our President, Congress, and Supreme Court, to use these blessings to be an international blessing. Help us to bring peace to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Darfur. Show us the way to better relations with Iran. We cling to you, . . .

Three-in-One, we struggle with relationships. Divorce can be excruciating. Bring healing to those in painful relationships, including those who are going through a divorce. As we minister to the divorced, help us to show compassion. Always guide us to place love over legalism. We cling to you, . . .

Childlike Parent, we exalt you for children. Humble us to take proper care of them and not just do lip-service to our concern for children. We cling to you, . . .

You have made us a little lower than yourself. Teach us to live up to this honor, including by taking holy care of creation. We cling to you, . . .

Triune Lord, you take us into your arms and heal us. Take into your arms those in need, including all we mention in our hearts or aloud right now. [Add names.] We cling to you, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, all of these prayers we send up to you, thankful that you hear them and are already responding with love. In Jesus’ name we praise. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We give back to you a piece of the glory and honor you have bestowed upon us.

Benediction

Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has cradled and blessed us.

People: In response we will cradle and bless one another.
