Fifth Sunday in Lent, Year C

Call to Worship

Leader: With pure nard we anoint the feet of Jesus

People: and then wipe them with our hair,

Leader: preparing God for burial

People: which will lead to resurrection.

Invocation

Spirit, we praise you for Christ’s sacrifice. Guide us to press on toward the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

We insist on sin. We have failed to give you our best while criticizing the generosity of others. We fixate so much on the past that we cannot see the new thing that you are doing. We focus on weeping, neglecting the joy you give us amid the sorrow. We rely on our resume to save us instead of relying on Christ.

For the sake of the Crucified God, forgive us. Please. Yes.

Words of Assurance

Through Christ’s death, God forgives us our sins, every single one of them, no exceptions.

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Spirit, through the sermon anoint us, that we may anoint others as part of honoring Christ.

Prayers of the People

Mother of Mother Church, we thank you for the new pope. Bless him, that he may guide the Roman Catholic Church through this time of scandal and division to a time of healing and unity. God of Saint Patrick, (congregational response: you are the Lord of all hopefulness.).

Adonai of the communion of saints, we thank you for Patrick. We find inspiring his bold determination as he returned to Ireland to bring Christianity to the people. Teach us to be so bold. May we celebrate this day with, not drunkenness, but festive love. God of Saint Patrick, . . .

Lord of humanity, we praise you for people of every ethnicity. Show us anew how to learn from and celebrate each other. God of Saint Patrick, . . .

Mamma Elohim, spring will arrive this week. Yes! God of Saint Patrick, . . .

Compassionate Ruler, we exalt you for healing us and ask you to heal everyone who needs help now [Add names.] God of Saint Patrick, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

You turn our sorrow into joy. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Receive our perfume.

Benediction

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, anoints you,

People: holds us in the palm of his hand.
