Reign of Christ, Year C

Pentecost 26

Ordinary 34

Proper 29

Call to Worship

Leader: From the end of the year to the beginning, Christ is our ruler.

People: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we bow before our Mercy-Sovereign.

Leader: Jesus is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

People: Our Savior assures us that we will be with God in Paradise.

Invocation

Alpha and Omega, we offer thanksgiving for the Servant-Ruler who died to save us undeserving subjects. Because of your compassion, we do not get what we deserve for our deeds. Alleluia! Lead us to extend compassion to one another. In the name of that same Ruler we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

We thank you, Lord, for making the cross your throne so that we could live forever. We have been treasonous against you. We have abused your sheep. We have been so busy with fighting that we have not been still and focused on you. We have put our trust in earthly rulers but not in you. We have failed to show mercy to others as you have shown mercy to us.

By your omnipotent name, forgive us. Pardon us.

Words of Assurance

Leader: Alleluia! The Cross-Messiah has indeed pardoned us. All your sins are forgiven. There is a place for you in Paradise. Alleluia!

People: Alleluia!

Leader: Alleluia!

ALL: Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Mighty Fortress, calm us, open our minds and hearts to hear, speak, and live the Word. Yes.

Prayers of the People

Shepherd, you have led the Church, your flock. We offer thanksgiving for great church leaders, including Clement of Rome, martyrs such as Miguel Agustin Pro, pastors such as William Passavant, and hymnwriters such as Isaac Watts. Continue to train us to be sheep-shepherds according to your leadership. Loving Monarch, (congregational response: we praise you for your wisdom.).

Adonai, we creatures come in staggering variety. Unite us according to your love. Bless President Obama and every leader, that they may all be humble before you.  Loving Monarch, . . .

We glorify you for the liberation of Aung San Suu Kyi. Guide her work, that Burma may know true freedom for its people. Loving Monarch, . . .

Cornucopious Elohim, Thanksgiving brings sumptuous joy. We glorify you for this holy day. For many, however, Thanksgiving is full of loneliness, hunger, and sadness. Feed us so that we may feed one another. Loving Monarch, . . .

As we gather for Thanksgiving, keep us safe in travel, and may our time together be rich in nourishing fellowship. Loving Monarch, . . .

God of Kairos and Chronos, you thank you for a fruitful church year. We are ever grateful for your faithfulness. Loving Monarch, . . .

Yahweh, you heal us. Touch with healing all we mention now. [Add names] Continue to train us to be your healing assistants. Loving Monarch, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Prostrate, we lay these prayers before your throne, thankful that you will deign to answer us with grace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Yes.

Offertory Prayer

From you we give to you, our hearts full of gratitude. May our offering help the poor.

Benediction

Leader: Today and every day throughout the year, Christ reigns over us.

People: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit blesses us.

Leader: We leave to live thanksgiving,

People: our eyes every upon the cross. Alleluia!

25th Sunday after Pentecost, Year C

Ordinary 33

Proper 28

Call to Worship

Leader: It is easy for us to forget who is in charge.

People: Quickly we forget the power of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Leader: God grants us courage against frightening times.

People: Thanks be to the Spirit, by our endurance, we will gain our souls.

Leader: The Lord is with us,

People: even when our world is falling apart.

Invocation

You, Alpha and Omega, are making all things new. It is tempting for us to become gloomy and pessimistic. We are quick to think that there is no hope. Lift our drooping hands and knees. Inspire us not to be complacent or fatalistic but to continue to love you and one another and to care for the planet. In your name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Kairos-God, throughout the ages you show us mercy, yet we persist in disobeying you. We fret about the last days, thinking we can predict when they will be. We tend to idealize the past and demonize the future. We become resigned and complacent, concluding that doing your work is futile. We fail to trust in your strength. We obsess over labeling others as evil, inferior to ourselves.

For the sake of the Salvation-Teacher, forgive us. In his name we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Be not afraid. Christ is with us always, even to the end of the age. All your sins are forgiven. Not a hair of your head will perish. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

Prayer of Inspiration

Rabbi, give us words and a wisdom that none of our opponents will be able to withstand or contradict.

Prayers of the People

Lord of All Time, throughout the centuries you have sustained the Church. We glorify you for renewers such as Elizabeth of Hungary. In the face of secularism, war, controversies, oppression, and economic struggle, embolden us to endure. Help us to persevere in doing what is right. Merciful Lord, (congregational response: heal us.).

Timeless-Adonai, we praise you for our planet and the human race. Bless the United States and all nations, that we may labor together to end hunger, war, injustice, and other forms of violence. Merciful Lord, . . .

Watch over soldiers and veterans, regardless of whose side they are on. Grant us the creativity, courage, and commitment needed to make war vanish. Merciful Lord, . . .

Over and over, God, people worry about the end of the world, convinced that our days are the last. Direct our focus away from such a fixation and toward loving you, loving the neighbor, and caring for the planet. Merciful Lord, . . .

Kairos-Mother, it is easy for us to complain and be pessimistic. Teach us not to focus on what people do wrong but instead on what you do right, including through us. Merciful Lord, . . .

Mama-Healer, we praise you for the many ways that you bless us. Bring healing to everyone in need. [Add names.] Guide our hands to serve your will as we care for others. Merciful Lord., . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We know you hear us. We know you are with us. We pray in the name of Christ. Alleluia. Yes!

Offertory Prayer

Not trusting in things but trusting in you, we offer you these gifts.

Benediction

Leader: Whether the time is favorable or unfavorable,

People: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is with us.

Leader: Throughout the week, the Lord will watch over you.

People: The Spirit grants us the endurance to do God’s work.

November 7, 2010

24th Sunday after Pentecost, Year C

Ordinary 32

Proper 27

(All Saints’ Sunday)

Call to Worship

Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the God of the living.

People: Through God, all of us, living or dead, are alive.

Leader: Through baptism, Christ canonizes each of us.

People: We are all members of the communion of saints, thanks be to God’s mercy. Yes! Hallelujah!

Invocation

Savior of Zerubbabel, you promise us eternal, supernal glory in the end-time, and you show us glimpses of that glory in the meantime, regardless of how mean that time is. As we wait for the consummation, continue to strengthen us to live like the saints that you have made us into through Christ, embodying that final glory through our care for each other and creation. In the name of the Saving One we pray. Maranatha!

Prayer of Confession

Resurrection-El, we praise you for offering us life eternal over death infernal. You have made us holy, but we cling to sin. We are at once saint and sinner. We get bogged down in theological arguments while ignoring the main message of the God-News. We dream of the future or idealize the past while failing to see you at work in the present. We are quick to label opponents as the Lawless One and so miss that the Lawless One may also be in the mirror. We take delight in declaring who is damned instead of working to identify who is in need.

Jesus, have mercy on us sinners. Wash clean our soul-flesh. Through you, we are holy. Redeem us to live accordingly. Please.

Words of Assurance

Hallelujah! Blessed are you, for Christ has forgiven you every single one of your sins. Believe it! You are free!

Prayer of Inspiration

Teacher, through our sermon, open us to be Word-blessings for the world. Amen.

Prayers of the People

Sovereign of Zerubbabel and Sadducee, we praise you for your resurrection-patience. You have  saved us through Christ. Over and over, you have blessed the Church with new life. Because of you, we are the communion of saints. Keep empowering us to live as such. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (congregational response: you care for us throughout all times.).

Ruler who restores the faithful remnant to glory, we cherish humanity’s diversity. Bless us humans, that we may care for the poor and oppressed, focusing, not on national boundaries, but on your unifying love. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, . . .

Mother of us all, we praise you for your servant Martin Luther. Grant us the serenity, courage, and wisdom to know when to reform and when to preserve what we have. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, . . .

Lord of Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah, we exalt you for the women and men who have served or are serving in the Armed Forces. May we give them the honor and care they need. May we all work toward an age when war will only be in the history books. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, . . .

Merciful Adonai, you hold us close and heal us. Tend to those in need [Add names.]. Bless us to be a blessing to the afflicted. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, . . .

You have made us holy, have promised us life. We remember those whom you have welcomed through the ajar gates. [Add names]. Comfort us, that we may always hold fast to the truth that those who have died are really more alive than we are. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We, the saint-community, offer these prayers to you because we trust in your healing love. In the name of our Rabbi-Savior we pray. Amen. Yes.

Offertory Prayer

We give back to you a portion of your riches in anticipation of the City of the farthest-reaching wealth.

Benediction

Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has washed you, saved you, made you holy.

People: We leave to share that holiness with a world in need of hope. Hallelujah! Yes!

October 31, 2010

23rd Sunday after Pentecost, Year C

Ordinary 31

Proper 26

Call to Worship

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, calls us to salvation.

People: The Lord insists on going to our house.

Leader: The world is full of the triumph of the wicked,

People: but, through Christ, we the righteous shall live by faith.

Invocation

Lord of Zacchaeus, your mercy is for everyone. Humble us to share the Good News with all people and to dedicate our wealth to you. In your name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

We praise you, Adonai, for the joy of forgiveness, for the merciful wisdom of your Law. We come to you with kneeling hearts, seeking forgiveness. Sometimes we are stubborn about our sin. We let our bodies waste away. We are greedy about our money and judgmental of those who have more than we do. You knock on our door, but we don’t invite you in. We are wasteful with the time, money, and ability that you have entrusted to us.

Rabbi-Savior, forgive us. Bring salvation to this house of worship, for we, too, are children of Abraham and Sarah. Please. Yes.

Words of Assurance

Leader: Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. You confessed your transgressions to the LORD, and God forgave you the guilt of your sin.

People: Salvation has indeed come to this house, thanks be to Christ. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Ghost, make our proclamation of the Good News plain so that anyone can hear it. Yes.

Prayers of the People

Hallowed God, you have blessed the Church with countless saints. We praise you for making us holy through baptism. Continue to guide us, so that we can live like the saints you have made us to be. Renewing Lord, (congregational response: we thank you for hearing us.).

God of change and immutability, we remember the Protestant Reformation, which began on this date in 1517. Repeatedly the Church is in need of reform. Grant us the courage to make the necessary changes while also holding fast to the Gospel-Core. Renewing Lord, . . .

Unifying Mother, often we get nasty with each other over differences in the Church. Instead, help us to celebrate our differences while also being one in you, including by working together to care for the poor. Renewing Lord,  . . .

Powerful Elohim, we thank you for the fun of Halloween. As we celebrate, lead us to be safe and upright. May this day be a reminder that evil has no lasting hold on us, because of the death and resurrection. Renewing Lord, . . .

Sovereign of all, bless humanity. Fill us with the courage to end war and poverty and to care for your creation. Renewing Lord, . . .

Empowering God, you cradle us in healing. Heal everyone we mention now [Add names]. Compel us to do our part in the healing process. Renewing Lord, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Take these prayers, Adonai, and mold them into new life. In the name of our Savior we pray and praise. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We offer a portion of our possessions to your exaltation, including through assisting the poor.

Benediction

Leader: The Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, arrives at your house, is ever with you,

People: and we shall share this love with each person in need. Yes.
