Submit Your Own! June 5, 2011 By David von Schlichten June 5, 2011 Seventh Sunday of Easter, Year A Call to Worship Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen and ascended to the right hand of God. People: Jesus rules over us and abides in us. Never are we alone. Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, unifies us. People: We are one through the all-powerful love of the Risen One. Alleluia! Invocation Crucified, Risen, and Ascended God, we thank you for blessing our Easter season. Keep reminding us to celebrate your death, resurrection, and ascension throughout the year, that we may be strong against the prowling devil and receptive to the blazing Holy Spirit. Yes! Amen. Prayer of Confession Yahweh’s Right-Hand God-Human, we have trespassed against you. We keep dividing ourselves, bickering and back-stabbing over so many issues, melodrama-addicted, ignoring your call to oneness. We stare heavenward, waiting for the next sign, and so fail to notice your presence around us. We are quick to try to pet the roaring lion, thinking he’s a harmless kitten. By your blood, forgive us. Heal us. Reunite us to you and one another. Please. Amen. Words of Assurance Hallelujah, Christ has defeated death. Therefore, all our sins are forgiven. All of them. We are at-oned to God. Amazing! Prayer of Inspiration Spirit, come. Prayers of the People Adonai on High, your abiding in the Church is the highest of blessings. We are grateful for Church renewers such as Columba, Aidan, and Bede. We exalt you especially for the apostle Barnabas. Shepherd us to be always open to the in-breaking of the Spirit. Unifying God, (congregational response: hear us.). Mother, the Devil is ever prowling, drooling, starving for our damnation. Strengthen us against Satan. Deliver us from the Evil One. Make us vigilant against the subtle temptations that frequently we trivialize. Unifying God, . . . Adonai on High, we tend to split apart from each other. We get into an argument, and soon we are transferring our membership or forming a new, “purer” denomination. Grant us the wise humility to be less stubborn and more cooperative, to resolve conflicts, not by slamming doors, but by opening our minds. Unifying God, . . . Sovereign, you have made us part of an extraordinary creation. Embolden us to work for peace and to care for the planet. Help us to understand that Nature is not some inferior other but is something of which we are a part. Unifying God, . . . Adonai on High, it is amazing how you take care of us. Heal all those in need. [Add names.] Use us to bring wholeness to all. Unifying God, . . . Mama-El, we find amazing the death, resurrection, and ascension of our savior. Teach us the meaning of the Ascension. Unifying God, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. We pray in Jesus’ name, so we know you hear us. Thank you. Yes. Offertory Prayer Through this offering, we sing to you, who ride upon the clouds. Benediction Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, watches over us and abides in us. People: We do not keep staring at the heavens but instead return to the world to do God’s work, Leader: one in the Ascended Christ. People: Yes! Alleluia!

Leader: Because of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, People: we are never alone. Alleluia! Invocation God, there is so much about you that is unknown to us. Through the Spirit of truth, teach us. Instruct us on keeping the commandments. When we fail to understand, inspire us to continue to abide in you. In the name of the risen Christ we pray. Amen. Prayer of Confession Compassion-Adonai, we are sinners. We pick and choose when it comes to keeping your commandments. We claim to love you always, but we love one another only sometimes. Because of our stubborn ignorance and igNORance, you remain unknown to us. You are with us, but we are quick to think that you have forsaken us. Our consciences are filthy. For the sake of Christ, forgive us. Amen. Words of Assurance Leader: Christ is risen. People: Alleluia! Leader: Because of the Death and Resurrection, God forgives you all your sins, no matter what. People: Alleluia! Prayer of Inspiration Advocate, through our sermon, teach us the truth. Yes. Prayers of the People Abiding One, from the beginning you have taken care of the Church. We praise you for martyrs such as Justin, the martyrs of Uganda, and Boniface, bishop of Mainz; and for hymnwriters such as Jiri Tranovsky. We recall with reverent joy the visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. Amazing. God, you hear us (congregational response: and attend to the sound of our prayer.). We are in awe of Christ’s ascension to your right hand. After dying and rising, he returned to the seat of omnipotence, where he continues to rule over us yet close to us. God, you hear us . . . Abiding One, we delight in humanity’s diversity and richness of creation. Bless the United States, including President Obama, and people all around the planet. Call to Worship Leader: Christ is risen. Christ is the way, and the truth, and the life. People: Alleluia! Leader: Because of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we are living stones, a royal priesthood. People: We proclaim the mighty acts of Jesus Christ. Alleluia! Invocation Risen Lord, we believe in God, we believe also in you. In your name we ask that you stir up in us the Holy Spirit. Feed us the spiritual milk, that we, like Stephen, may be ever devoted to you. Yes. Amen. Prayer of Confession In you, O LORD, we have taken refuge. Rescue us from our sinful selves. Through our foolishness we have set nets for ourselves. We cling to idols, such as thinness and youth. We act more profane than priestly. You have made us into living stones, but we throw stones. You offer us spiritual milk, but we spit it out and gulp down culture-pop. Lord, do not hold these sins against us. In the name of Christ, forgive us. Incline your ear to us; make haste to deliver us from ourselves. Please. Words of Assurance Leader: Hallelujah, Messiah is risen! Through Christ all your sins are forgiven. People: God’s face shines upon us. The Lord saves us in divine, steadfast love. Prayer of Inspiration Holy Spirit, through the sermon, show us the way, the truth, the life. Yes. Prayers of the People Cornerstone-God, we thank you for building the Church. We praise you for edifying theologians such as John Calvin. Teach us ever to make renovations to the Church according to your design and to preserve according to your design. Into your hands, (congregational response: we commend our prayers.). We glorify you for our nation and for the richness of humanity and all creation. Guide the United States and President Obama to help those in need. Bring healing to those suffering because of the flooding of the Mississippi. Inspire each of us to help. Show the entire planet the way to peace. Into your hands, . . . Adonai of Living Stones, you have graced us with extraordinary scientists who have helped us to understand better your creation. We exalt you for Nicolaus Copernicus, Leonhard Euler, and other brave thinkers. Teach us that science and religion need not be antagonists but can work together to honor you and care for one another. Into your hands, . . . We rejoice over the gift of confirmation. As we recall our baptism, the Holy Spirit confirms our faith. Teach the newly confirmed the truth that confirmation is not graduation from Sunday school but the beginning of adulthood in the Church. Lead us to support the newly confirmed. Into your hands, . . . Elohim, you are our strong rock. Heal those we mention now [Add names.] Fortify us to care for those in need. Into your hands, . . . Teach us, Lord, not to throne stones, but to be living stones. Into your hands, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. We ask these prayers in the name of Jesus Christ, so we know that, according to your will, you will answer them. Yes. Amen. Offertory Prayer Accept this sacrifice of thanksgiving from us, your holy nation, the baptized. Benediction Leader: Alleluia, Christ is risen! God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, holds our spirit in his hands. People: We royal priests follow the Way, the Truth, the Life. Alleluia!

Teach us to listen to your voice and care for those who have wandered away. Yes. Amen. Prayer of Confession God of the Gate, you are eager to welcome us. You call us back to you, but we are easily fooled, misled. We are vulnerable to thieves and bandits. We become thieves and bandits, quick to shortchange you and the needy. Words of Assurance Leader: Alleluia! People: Alleluia! Leader: Through Christ, God has snatched you away from the jaws of sin. You are forgiven. People: Christ is risen. Alleluia! We exalt you for your magnificent creation, including us humans in all our variety. Bless our nation and planet. Lead each of us to work together for universal peace. Shepherd God, (congregational response: lead us.). God, we are thankful that Osama bin Laden is no longer a threat, but we do not delight in his death. Humble and embolden all of us to work toward a day on which no one will be killed in the name of peace. There will be, not ironic death, but irenic life. Monarch of us all, (congregational response: lead us.). God, we capitalists tend to be greedy about our money and stuff. Help us to learn from the community in Acts, in which the members “. . . sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all . . .” according to need. Shepherd God, (congregational response: lead us). We praise you for healing us in body, mind, and soul. Touch with healing everyone in need at this hour. [Add names.] Grant us the courage to be your healing assistants. Monarch of us all, (congregational response: we listen to your voice.). You may add other praises and petitions here. Benediction Leader: The risen Shepherd-Christ feeds us, goads us, shelters, us, calls us. People: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we venture out to seek the lost, leaving the building but not the flock. Alleluia!
