Submit Your Own! January 29, 2012, Fourth Sunday after Epiphany By David von Schlichten January 29, 2012 Fourth Sunday after Epiphany, Year B
Call to Worship Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Spirit, makes us clean. People: What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Leader: We know who you are, Jesus. You are the Holy One of God. People: Heal us with your new teaching, your redeeming authority. Yes! Invocation Pure Spirit, we praise you for filling us to be your prophets. Ever guide us not to lead one another into temptation and, by your power, to deliver one another from the Evil One. In the name of the Exorcist-Messiah we pray. Amen. Prayer of Confession God of Moses and Joshua, you alone are God, and you alone save us. Every hour we sin against you. We allow evil to infiltrate us, puppet us, dominate us. We insist on behavior that leads others astray instead of doing our best to help those who are spiritually weaker. We puff up with knowledge instead of building up with love. We reject wisdom. For the sake of Jesus the Teacher, forgive us. Drive the demons out of us. Yes! Words of Assurance Christ says to your demons, Be silent, and come out!” Jesus liberates you from your sins and the stranglehold of the Devil. Alleluia! Prayer of Inspiration Spirit, we have gathered in the synagogue. Teach us the Teacher. Show us Wisdom. Prayers of the People Adonai, you have graced the Church with wise leaders. Whether we are in the wilderness or the Promised Land, grant us the humility also to be faithful to your teachings. Rabbi-God, (congregational response: teach us wisdom.). You, God, are stronger than all the world’s evil, yet we are quick to think that evil is stronger. Show us anew that you are indeed mightier, so that we can spread hope to everyone. Rabbi-God, . . . We find magnificent your creation. Bless the United States and every nation. Unite us all in efforts to take better care of your creation, remembering that we humans are a part of it. What happens to creation happens to us. Rabbi-God, . . . Mother, many people are less fortunate. They are not as wise. They are confused, lost, easily swayed. Take us by the hand and show us how to help such people without being condescending. Lead us away from being judgmental. Rabbi-God, . . . Ima-Abba, you touch us with your compassion. Heal everyone in need we mention now [Add names.]. Use us to exorcise suffering from one another. Rabbi-God, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. In the name of Christ we present these prayers to you, thankful for your responses. Amen. Offertory Prayer Use these gifts, O God, to make us and others clean. Benediction Leader: The demons shriek under the authority of Jesus Christ. People: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, delivers us from evil. Leader: Share the Good News. People: We will strengthen the weak. Yes!
David von Schlichten, poedifier January 22, 2012, Third Sunday after Epiphany By David von Schlichten January 22, 2012 Third Sunday after Epiphany, Year B
Call to Worship Leader: The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent, and believe in the Good News. People: Jesus calls us. Leader: Christ says, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” People: Immediately we leave our nets and follow the Messiah. Invocation We thank you, Jesus, for catching us. Fill us with the courage to fish for people. Empower us to travel even to Nineveh to do your work. Yes. Prayer of Confession God, you long to show us mercy. We have sinned against you in words, actions, and thoughts. You call us to follow you, but we hesitate to drop everything, are reluctant to commit to you fully. We have been hasty with rejecting people as our enemies. We hunger for exacting revenge instead of showing mercy. For the sake of our Savior, forgive us. Lead us. Amen. Words of Assurance Alleluia! God alone is our rock and salvation. Just as the Almighty forgave Nineveh, so also does the Almighty forgive you and me. We are set free from entrammeling sin. Prayer of Inspiration Holy Spirit, through our Word-preaching, teach us to share your mercy. Yes. Prayers of the People We exalt you, Adonai, for the Church, future, present, and past. You have granted us missionaries such as Timothy, Titus, and Silas. You have blessed us with witnesses such as Lydia, Dorcas, and Phoebe. You have led us with geniuses such as Thomas Aquinas. Compassionate God, (congregational response: you liberate us.). Mother, you have given us a great nation and an astonishing planet. Bless Barack Obama and all rulers. Grant Iraq a lasting peace. Humble us to care for the non-human parts of creation. Save us humans from being sinfully self-centered. Compassionate God, . . . Rock and Salvation, you heal us. Heal everyone in need. [Add names]. Strengthen us to help care for each other. Compassionate God, . . . Gentle Ima, just as you ordered Jonah to care for his enemies, you order us to do likewise. Fill us with the humble boldness needed to care for those who have tried to kill us, those who vow to hate us. Compassionate God, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. Receive our prayers in the name of Christ. Amen. Offertory Prayer We present to you a portion of the riches you have entrusted to us. Benediction Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has sprung you free and sent you out. People: We enter the week with holy, freeing nets. Yes!
David von Schlichten, poedifier January 15, 2012, Second Sunday after Epiphany, Year B By David von Schlichten January 15, 2012 Second Sunday after Epiphany, Year B
Call to Worship Leader: Free at last! Free at last! Thank Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that we are free at last, thanks be to Christ. People: Jesus, our Rabbi, is the Son of God, the King of Israel. Leader: Our Epiphany-Savior bids us to come and see. People: The Messiah will show us great things. Alleluia! Invocation God of Samuel and Nathanael, you have searched us out and known us. We hear you calling us, and by the Spirit’s power we follow you. Edify us to live as the temple of the Holy Spirit. In the name of the Lord of Light we pray. Amen. Prayer of Confession Theo-luminescent Yahweh, we exalt you for sending Jesus to die and rise for our salvation, but oh, how we sin against you! We are quick to be elitist, thinking we are better than those people from Nazareth. We hasten to be racist, sexist, homophobic, and self-centered as humans. We claim to treat everyone equally but then demean each other, often in subtle, self-justifying ways. We fail to treat one another as the temple of the Holy Spirit, violating each other’s bodies. By Christ’s love, forgive us. Lead us to the light. Wash us. Open our ears to your voice. Yes. Words of Assurance Alleluia! We are the baptized, the called! Because of the Son of Man, the Almighty forgives you all your sins. Go, and love one another as God has loved us. Alleluia! Prayer of Inspiration Speak, Lord; your servants are listening. Prayers of the People You have called and guided the Church, Supremely Wise Mother. We thank you for that extraordinary prophet, Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspire us to live out his dream of judging people, not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Help us not to do lip-service to equality but to devote our whole selves to equality. God of Oneness, (congregational response: guide us to listen to you.). Three-in-One, Jesus prays for us to be one as you are one. We often allow our disagreements in the Church to rip us apart. Humble us to disagree but still be united, remembering that we in the Church can do your work more effectively when we work together. God of Oneness, . . . God of body and soul, our bodies are sacred, yet we often desecrate them. Teach us to take better care of ourselves. Heal us of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, tobacco abuse, overeating, and sexual misconduct. Lead us to honor our bodies and the bodies of one another. God of Oneness, . . . Over and over, Mother, you restore us. Heal each person in need, including everyone we mention now in our hearts or with our lips. [Add names.] Tutor us to be your healing assistants. God of Oneness, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. Transform our prayers into healing in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Offertory Prayer We come to you with these gifts. Use them for the good of all. Yes. Benediction Leader: The One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, knows you, has called you, has made you sacred. People: We go and see Christ in one another, free at last. Alleluia!
David von Schlichten, poedifier January 8, 2012, Baptism of Our Lord By David von Schlichten January 8, 2012 Baptism of Our Lord
Call to Worship Leader: And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens ripped apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, People: “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Leader: Likewise, you are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: Because of Christ, God declares us beloved. Yes. Invocation Three-in-One, we ponder reverently the baptism of our Lord and our own baptism. We exalt you for saving us through the bath into Christ. Teach us to live wet, to hear your voice. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen. Prayer of Confession You have washed us into belovedness, but we roll around in sin. We tune out the Voice. We ignore the Spirit. We turn to black holes instead of following the Star. We are foolish men and women, offering you a dollar while hoarding our gold. For the sake of the Lord of Light, Jesus Christ the Baptized, forgive us. Scrub us new. Amen. Words of Assurance Alleluia! Christ is born and has saved you from all your sins. You are the baptized. You are the forgiven. The Light overcomes the darkness. Alleluia! Prayer of Inspiration Dove, teach us through the Word to live as the well-pleased. Prayers of the People God, we thank you for the Church, the baptized, the communion of saints. Illumine us to live according to the Holy Spirit. Almighty LORD, (congregational response: your voice heals us.). Adonai, we are grateful for our nation, humanity, and your splendid creation. Bless President Obama and every leader. Heal Washington of its bipartisan sibling rivalry. Lead all of us to work together for the healing of the nations. Almighty LORD, . . . Mother, we find fascinating and inspiring the magi. Compel us to be like them by following your light and bringing to you our finest gifts, which ultimately are yours in the first place. Almighty LORD, . . . Elohim, you heal us. Heal everyone in need, including those we mention in our hearts or out loud [Add names.]. Empower us to help with the healing. Almighty LORD, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. In the name of Jesus Christ we present these prayers, exalting you for hearing us. Amen. Offertory Prayer For the good of others, accept our gifts of myrrh, gold, and frankincense. Yes. Benediction Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has dunked you into new life. People: We follow the Beloved who has made us beloved. Alleluia!
David von Schlichten, poedifier Prayers for January 1, 2012 By David von Schlichten Name of Jesus January 1, 2012 Call to Worship Leader: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with go with haste to find Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. People: With Mary, we treasure all these things and ponder them in our heart. Leader: As we cross the bridge from 2011 to 2012, we continue to celebrate the Twelve Days, People: confident that our new names in Christ will last forever. Invocation God of the Strong Name, in the fullness of time you sent the Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to adopt us. Christ emptied himself so that we could be eternally full. Long after the holydays have faded, help us to continue to cry, “Abba! Father! Ima! Mother!” and to kneel before the manger. In the name of the Enfleshed Word we pray. Amen. Prayer of Confession We exalt you, Adonai, for sending the Son to be born in Bethlehem for our redemption, our adoption. We are in awe of the saving name, but still we sin. We focus on losing weight, but we neglect to strengthen the soul. We pack away our Christmas devotion along with the Christmas decorations. We fail to take care of creation. We hear the Aaronic blessing but then speak ironic cursing. You have renamed us, but we live according to the old names, Adam and Eve. For the sake of the newborn Savior, forgive us. Amen. Words of Reassurance Gloria in excelsis Deo! Christ was born to save you. Christ became empty and obedient so that we could live forever. All your sins are forgiven. What a present! Good Christian friends, rejoice! Prayer of Inspiration Holy Spirit, fill us with the name of the Word, that we may live according to God. Prayers of the People Word-Yahweh, even though we are small, you have elevated us to be second only to you. We praise you for the Church, including the Cappadocians. Teach us to live according to your holy name. God of Noel, (congregational response: we call upon the Name.). We give thanks for the blessings of 2011. It is easy for us not to appreciate the good you gave us, but we do not take your blessings for granted. Moreover, we are confident that you will carry us in your arms throughout 2012. God of Noel, . . . We glorify you, God of Time, for our nation and for all of creation, included us seven billion people. Embolden and humble us to be committed to peace, even when doing so demands large and painful sacrifices. God of Noel, . . . Bless our Orthodox siblings as they begin their Christmas celebration. Continue to teach us Christians to be one despite our differences. God of Noel, . . . Lord of Supreme Gifts, you magnify us with healing. Heal those in need. [Add names.] Tutor us to be your theo-peutic assistants. God of Noel, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. All of these prayers we lay before the Baby Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen. Offertory Prayer As wise women and men, we bring you gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Benediction Leader: The Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you and keep you; People: the Trinity’s face shine upon you; Leader: God of the Birth look upon you with favor and give you peace all 366 days of the year. People: Amen. Gloria! David von Schlichten, poedifier
