Second Sunday of Easter, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Alleluia, Christ is alive! The cross is empty, the tomb is empty.

People: Do not doubt but believe.

Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, pours love upon us like oil.

People: Our Lord and our God! Alleluia!

Invocation

Source of faith, we exalt you for the resurrection of Christ. When our doubt takes control of our hearts, fill us with the assurance that your devotion to us is invincible. In the name of our crucified and risen Savior we pray. Alleluia! Amen.

Prayer of Confession

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Jesus, you are alive. You are with us for all eons to come and beyond. We believe; help our unbelief. How easy it is for us to hit an ice berg; how easy it is for us to sink. Save us. Forgive us. Keep us Good Friday/Easter focused throughout the year. Heal us. Hold us. Lead us. Yes.

Words of Assurance

Christ lives. Your sins are no match for God’s grace. The blood of Jesus cleanses you. You walk in the light. Believe, even though you have not seen. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Spirit, teach us to receive your power through the Word. Yes.

Resurrection of Our Lord/Easter Day, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: The tomb is empty. God has raised Christ from the dead. Alleluia!

People: Alleluia!

Leader: Death does not have the last word. The Devil, sin, and evil are temporary. Life and love are eternal. Christ is risen!

People: Christ is risen!

Leader: Thanks be to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Alleluia!

People: Alleluia!

Invocation

Son of God, we praise you for humbling yourself to snatch us free from sin and death. You hung on the cross to rescue us from despair. You have reconnected us to God. We praise you. Yes! We have indestructible hope because of you. Thank you. Amen!

Prayer of Confession

Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we have never-ending forgiveness. We are quick to lose sight of the significance of Easter. The season is fifty days, but we celebrate only for a day or two. We focus on ham and hyacinths but lose sight of Christ’s victory over death and how we are to live in response.

For the sake of the Savior, forgive us. Lead us to live Good Friday and Easter every day. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Alleluia, because of Jesus, God forgives your sins. All erased, deleted. The Lord sets you free. Amazing!

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Spirit, through our sermon teach us to be Easter people living cross-shaped lives. Amen.

Prayers of the People

We glorify you, Christ, for sustaining the Church, keeping us alive and granting us strength for two-thousand years. Lord, (congregational response: your love gives us life.).

We praise you, Christ, for your magnificent creation, including our nation. Lord, . . .

We thank you for our leaders, including President Obama, and ask you to guide them. Lord, . . .

You have blessed our military. Continue to assist those men and women. Bring them home safely, and continue to push us to give them the care they need. Lord, . . .

We exalt you for family and friends. During this holiday, keep us safe in travel, and may our time together be full of edifying pleasure. Lord, . . .

For many, a holiday is full of pain. Comfort the grieving, lonely, and ill, especially those we mention now. [Add names.] Push us to expand our care for others. Lord, . . .

Mother of our salvation, keep teaching us that Good Friday and Easter are to shape how we live every day of the year. Lord, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Thank you, Jesus, for hearing us and leading us to life. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

In response to your sacrifice, we offer this sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Benediction

Leader: Jesus Christ is risen today.

People: Alleluia!

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Spirit, has ended death.

People: We leave to live as people of love and life.

Leader: Alleluia!

People: Alleluia!

Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion, April 1, 2012
By David von Schlichten

Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Hosanna!

People: Crucify Christ!

Leader: Crucify Christ!

People: Hosanna!

Invocation

Passion-God, the torture and death of Christ shock us still. Open us anew to this extraordinary story. Teach us to live cross-shaped lives. In the name of holy Jesus we pray by the Spirit’s guidance. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

God, with our sins, we kill Christ. We sanitize the crucifixion, failing to meditate upon its ugly beauty. We fill ourselves with stuff, refusing to empty ourselves for you. We hasten to deny or betray Christ for the sake of our self-preservation. We shout “Hosanna!” one minute and “Crucify!” the next.

For the sake of the Messiah, forgive us. Save us.

Words of Assurance

Christ became obedient, emptying himself for our salvation. God forgives you all your sins.

Prayer of Inspiration

In your hands, O Spirit, we commit our proclamation of the Word for glorifying God, including through healing the nations.

Prayers of the People

Our God, our God, you have not forsaken us, the Church. For the many ways you have empowered us Christians, we praise you, (congregational response: Lord of the cross.).

Our God, our God, your creation is inspiring, soothing, and exciting, and we are honored to be a part of it. That we may take better care of it, we pray to you, . . .

Our Mother, our Mother, we thank you for our nation, including our President. Watch over him and each of us. Lead us to bring shalom to all the world. We pray to you, . . .

Exodus-Elohim, we thank you for liberating our Jewish ancestors from slavery in Egypt. Bless Passover, that it may yield joy and strength for all of our Jewish siblings. We pray to you, . . .

We are in awe of the suffering and death of Jesus Messiah. During this holiest of weeks, slow us down to meditate upon the highest of sacrifices, ever praying to you, . . .

Our God, our God, you heal us. Touch all in need [Add names.]. Fill us with the wisdom we need to be your assistants in healing. We pray to you, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We pray in the name of the Crucified God. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Accept our sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Benediction

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, lead us.

People: By the Trinity’s power, we go to dark Gethsemene.

Lent 5B, March 25, 2012
By David von Schlichten

March 25, 2012

Fifth Sunday in Lent, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Unless a grain of wheat falls and dies, it remains a single grain. But if it dies, it produces much wheat,

People: thanks be to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Leader: Jesus gave up life so we could live.

People: Through the lifting-up, Christ draws all creation toward life.

Invocation

Son of Man, we exalt you for your self-sacrificing glorification. During these last couple weeks of Lent, intensify our passion for your suffering, death, and resurrection. Recommit us to you. Yes.

Prayer of Confession

We have trespassed against you, God. We have been sinners since birth, infected with the Original Sin. Polluted. We are guilty of many forms of infidelity. We have cheated on you. We are unwilling to surrender our lives, to allow ourselves to die so that you can make us sprout new life. When people trespass against us, we are slow to forgive and even slower to forget, to cancel the debt.

For the sake of the Glorified One, forgive us. We are broken, contrite. Cleanse us with hyssop; create in us pure hearts. Amen.

Words of Assurance

GOD, according to the divine compassion, blots out our transgressions, remembers our sins no more. In God’s eyes, because of Christ, it is as if we had never sinned. Thanks be to Christ for the glory on the cross. Yes.

Prayer of Inspiration

Spirit of the Melchizedek High Priest, teach us through the Word to live the Cross.

Prayers of the People

Passover-Adonai, without you, the Church would perish. We thank you for the Church’s many brilliant writers, including John Donne, who teaches us that we shall never be chaste unless you ravish us. Through Christ, (congregational response: heal us.).

We praise you for the Anunciation from Gabriel to Mary. What a miracle that was! Open our ears and eyes to Anunciation-moments, both ones we receive and ones we give, thanks be to the Spirit. Through Christ, . . .

Dying-Seed Lord, we exalt you for your mesmerizing creation. Bless the United States and people everywhere. Humble us to take better care of your creation, including by ending violence and helping the poor. Through Christ, . . .

Mother, you are the Healer. Touch all those in need, including everyone we mention in our hearts or out loud [Add names.]. Lead us to care for others in bolder ways. Through Christ, . . .

Com-Passion-Elohim, we are slow to forgive others and ourselves. Infuse us with the courage to forgive in imitation of your mercy. Through Christ, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We entrust these prayers to you in the name of the Son of Man. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We offer sacrifices. May they delight you.

Benediction

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has sown, fed, and watered you.

People: We die to live in accord with the Cross. Yes.

Lent 4B, March 18, 2012
By David von Schlichten

March 18, 2012

Fourth Sunday in Lent, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Spirit, did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world,

People: but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Leader: Rejoice! Like the serpent in the wilderness, Christ is lifted up

People: so that we could live forever. Rejoice!

Invocation

God of pink Easter dawn, we exalt you for so loving us that you sent the Son to save us. You have created us in Christ Jesus for good works. Lead us to do those works, our eyes on the cross. In the name of the Savior we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

We have sinned by speaking against you, LORD. We bite each other with our venomous selfishness. We are quick to complain about small problems while billions of people struggle with starvation, war, and life-threatening disease. We make Lent about losing weight instead of giving love. We try to hide in the dark of denial.

For the sake of the Crucified God, forgive us. Heal us of the bite of sin, death, and Satan. Yes.

Words of Assurance

Leader: Give thanks to the LORD, for God is good.

People: Christ’s mercy endures forever.

Leader: Through the cross, God has saved you by grace through faith. All your sins are forgiven, every single one of them.

People: We rejoice over God’s unflinching love.

Prayer of Inspiration

Guide us to tell the story of redemption.

Prayers of the People

That we in the Church may keep our eyes and lives on the cross, we pray to you, (congregational response: grateful for you love.)

That we may rejoice over our redemption every day through loving actions toward others, we pray to you, . . .

That we Christians may follow the positive examples of martyrs such as Thomas Cranmer and Oscar Romero and teachers such as Jonathan Edwards, we pray to you, . . .

That we may care for children just as Joseph cared for Jesus, we pray to you, . . .

That our nation may help the poor, both at home and around the world, we pray to you, . . .

That we may celebrate spring by taking better care of your creation, we pray to you, . . .

That we may imitate your love for the world, we pray to you, . . .

That you may heal the sick, including those we mention now [Add names.], we pray to you, . . .

That you may guide our hands to help with your healing work, we pray to you, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Hear us, O God, in the name of Christ. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We sacrifice thank offerings to you. Yes!

Benediction

Leader: Rejoice, for Christ has saved you by grace through faith.

People: God, Father, Son, and Spirit, lifted up the Son for our redemption.

Leader: You have been set free to serve others.

People: We rejoice by serving with our eyes on the cross.
