Submit Your Own! August 23, 2009 By David von Schlichten August 23, 2009 Proper 16, Ordinary 21 Pentecost 12 Call to Worship Leader: Lord, to whom can we go? People: You have the words of eternal life. Leader: We have come to believe that you are the Holy One of God. People: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Leader: we are committed to you, the Bread of Life. Invocation Spirit, we pray in you, praising you for your sword that does not kill, but heals. Teach us to wear the whole armor of God, that we and our households may dedicate ourselves every day to serving the Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen. Confession LORD, although your face is against those who do evil, you still are eager to forgive us. We have sinned against you. We put on the armor of selfish self-reliance, not realizing that we are naked. We put on the armor of money, thinking that paper can protect us. We wield swords that kill, claiming that we do so in the name of God. When you put tough teachings on our plate, we whine and choose to starve. For the sake of the Eternal-Life Bread, forgive us. Clean us out and dress us in the armor. Amen. Words of Assurance The eyes of the LORD are upon us, and God’s ears are open to our cries. By the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, God forgives you and me of every single one of our sins. The Almighty dresses us in mercy, feeds us life. Alleluia! Prayers of Inspiration Leader: Pray for me. People: Holy Spirit, when the preacher speaks, may a message be given to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which we are all ambassadors in chains. Leader: May we all hear and speak the good news boldly, as we must speak. Prayers of the People Almighty God, we praise you for the strength of the Church. We are in awe of apostles such as Bartholomew, geniuses such as Augustine, and martyrs such as Moses the Black. You have made us mighty with your mercy. We pray in the Spirit. (congregational response: Thank you for hearing us.). Invincible Lord, you have given our nation many blessings. Care for the United States and people of all lands, including Barack Obama and every leader. Lead us to wear the armor and wield the weapons that are non-violent. We pray in the Spirit . . . Lord who is invincible, we are relieved and delighted for vacation. Help us to care for those who are unable to go on vacation. Remind us when we are visiting another place that we are guests and should behave appropriately. Keep us safe in travel. Wherever we are, may we always make our rest time into Sabbath time. We pray in the Spirit . . . God of all might, you have heard us and healed us, over and over. Bring healing to all in need now [Add names]. We pray in the Spirit . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. You have listened to us and will respond with wise compassion. We praise you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Offertory Prayer We present this offering to you, rededicating ourselves to serving you. Benediction Leader: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Trinity, has filled us up and dressed us up. People: We wear the whole armor of God, ready to feed a hungry world the Bread of Life. Call to Worship Leader: Wisdom calls, “Come, eat of my bread.”
People: The one who eats this bread will live forever.
Leader: The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, offers Christ’s flesh.
People: Wisdom leads us to walk in the way of insight.
Invocation Advocate, guide us to be careful to live, not as unwise people, but as wise. Make us drunk with you. Fill us with Christ, in whose name we pray according to the Father’s will. So be it.
Confession Sophia-God, we continue to sin. Woman Foolishness lures us into her house. We steal. We feast on Forbidden Fruit. We gorge on junk, starving. Still, we refuse the Bread. We get drunk with wine, making no melody to you. We are quick to gripe to you but slow to thank you. For the sake of the One Who Feeds Us we pray. Amen.
Words of Assurance Leader: Alleluia:
People: Alleluia!
Leader: Because of Christ’s death and resurrection we have forgiveness. God forgives you of every single one of your sins, even if you cannot forgive yourself.
People: We shall live forever because we have answered the call to eat the Bread.
Leader: Alleluia:
People: Alleluia!
Prayers of Inspiration Spirit, we praise you for the feast. Fill us.
Prayers of the People We thank you, Adonai, for the Church and all its servants. You have guided us through wise leaders. We know that the Church would fall into hopeless foolishness without you. We fear you, O LORD. (congregational response: Your perfect love casts out all fear.).
We exalt you, God, for the Bible, baptism, and holy communion. In many ways, you take care of us. We fear you, O LORD . . .
King and Queen of the universe, you have made humanity breathtakingly diverse, and you have given us many wise leaders. Bless President Obama and rulers everywhere. Bring peace to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan. Carry every soldier, regardless of alliance, safely home. We fear you, O LORD . . .
You give us this day our daily bread, but billions of people go hungry. Teach us to be still and feed one another. We fear you, O LORD . . .
You astonish us with your generous healing love. Heal all we mention in our hearts or aloud right now. [Add names.] We fear you, O LORD . . .
You may add other praises and petitions here.
Leader: The young lions suffer want and hunger,
People: but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing, so we praise you for hearing us.
Offertory Prayer Our offering is part of our song of thanksgiving to you.
Benediction Leader: The Three-in-One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Wisdom-Mother, has nourished you.
People: We have tasted and seen that the LORD is good.
Leader: Share God’s wisdom by feeding the hungry.
People: Every day we will depart from evil, and do good. We will seek peace, and pursue it.

August 2, 2009 By David von Schlichten August 2, 2009Proper 13, Ordinary 18Pentecost 9 Call to Worship Leader: Mannna-giving Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we gather in your name to praise you. People: In the wilderness and in the garden we praise you for feeding us. Leader: You feed our bodies. People: Even better, you feed us the bread of life. Leader: We thank you for calling us to the feast, People: the feast that fills us to feed others. Invocation You are one, Holy Spirit, and you have made us one. Nourish us, so that we can live like the one body we are. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Confession LORD, in the wilderness and at the banquet, we complain. We are quick to gripe about how the past was perfect, the future is a failure, and the present is pitiful. When we are struggling, we fault you for not helping us. When you help us, we complain because what you gave us does not meet our standards. We speak lies with nastiness, claiming that we are speaking the truth in love. We divide ourselves, hotheaded, stubborn, and anxious. You aim to feed our souls, and we are obsessed over stuffing our bellies while our neighbor lies starving outside our door. For the sake of the Bread of Life, forgive us. Words of Assurance Jesus Christ has given himself to us so that we will never be hungry or thirsty. By his authority I declare that all your sins are forgiven, no matter what they are. You are emptied of your sins. Alleluia! Prayers of Inspiration Holy Spirit, as we proclaim the Word, grant us the courage and clarity to speak the truth in love. Prayers of the People Elohim of the Banquet, there is one body and one Spirit, just as we were called to the one hope of our calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, you. You are above all and through all and in all. Help us to live as the oneness we already are by your grace. Life-Manna, (congregational response: we praise you for hearing us.). We exalt you for the Church, including astounding leaders such as Dominic. We praise you for the gifts of baptism and holy communion. Teach us to draw together, not tear apart; to build up, not tear down. Teach us to speak the truth in love. Life-Manna, . . . You have handed to us a beautiful, diverse, and noble nation. We thank you for President Obama. Bless ours and every land, including all leaders. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with us. Life-Manna, . . . We cannot thank you enough for vacations. Help us to savor this time, to be safe, and to embrace our recreation as Sabbath-time re-creation. Life-Manna, . . . The world is full of people needing food. Save us from excuse-making. Drive us to work harder to feed the hungry. Life-Manna, . . . Elohim of the Banquet, you have cared for the sick of body, soul, and mind. Bring healing to those in need, particularly those we mention in our hearts or aloud at this time. [Add names.] Life-Manna, . . . You may add other praises and petitions here. We glorify you in advance for your responses to these prayers even before we know what they are, for your responses are always wise and gracious. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen. Offertory Prayer As part of the work of God, we spread this offering before you, a feast of love for your glory. Benediction Leader: The Three-Yet-One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has emptied us and filled us, People: so now we go, one, no longer children, eager to be manna for all in the wilderness. Invocation Holy Spirit, according to the riches of the God’s glory, strengthen our inner being with power, and make Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, as we are being rooted and grounded in love. Confession Jesus Christ, we sin against you every hour. We walk away from the Father instead of bowing our knees before him. We stuff ourselves with food. We throw crumbs to the poor and tell ourselves we have done enough. You approach us in the storm, and we grow in fear instead of rejoicing. We cry out for help but then forget to praise you when you help us. By your sacrifice on the cross, forgive us. Revive us to feed those who hunger in soul, mind, or body. So be it. Words of Assurance Christ fed himself to you, dying on the cross so that you shall live forever. God forgives all your sins – every single one of them.
