Sixth Sunday of Easter, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Sing to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ.

People: Alleluia! The LORD has done marvelous things.

Leader: The Almighty teaches, protects, and encourages us.

People: Praise to our Heavenly Mother. Alleluia!

Invocation

God, you have given birth to, raised, saved, and sanctified us all. Teach us to abide in you and to bear fruit of love for one another. In the name of the Ascended One we praise by the Spirit’s power. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Creator of all, we praise you for sending the Son to save us from our sins, which are numerous. We often become legalistic and rigid about rules and procedures instead of following your lead. We are also lax about keeping the commandments. You call us friends, but we act more like your casual acquaintances or even strangers, even enemies. We are careless with creation.

For the sake of the Risen and Ascended One, forgive us. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Sing to the LORD a new song. God has done marvelous things! Through the death and resurrection of the Messiah, the Almighty forgives us all our sins. By the power of Jesus, we conquer the world with love. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Paraclete, through the sermon, lead us to larger love for one another.

Prayers of the People

We are ever grateful for Mother Church, including St. Matthias and every leader. With all the earth (congregational response: we shout for joy to the LORD.)

We are in awe of the Ascension, and we meditate upon it so that its beautiful profundity may expand our wisdom. With all the earth . . .

We thank you for your astounding creation, including the United States. Humble each of us to work together to end poverty, war, injustice, disease, and abuse of the natural environment. With all the earth . . .

Mother of the universe, we exalt you for mothers of every sort. Mother figures do much but receive little gratitude. Tutor our hearts to show greater respect and tenderness toward mother figures. Help us to be more like them. With all the earth . . .

We praise you for healing us. Touch everyone in need of care now [Add names], and open our eyes to new ways that we can assist with the healing. With all the earth . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We give these prayers over to you, confident that you will respond with abiding love by the power of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

From your creation, we give back to you for your glory.

Benediction

Leader: God of the Vine,

People: you enable us to abide in you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Leader: Be our Mother-Leader throughout the week.

People: Show us how to love one another. Yes.

Fifth Sunday of Easter, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Christ is risen.

People: Alleluia!

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, makes us branches of the vine, prunes us to bear more fruit.

People: We abide in Christ. We live because he lives. Alleluia!

Invocation

God of the Ethiopian eunuch, you are radically inclusive. You have made us part of the vine even though we are unworthy. In the name of Christ, cultivate us to do acts of love, remembering that you are love. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

We thank you, God, for saving us through Christ’s death and resurrection, but we continue to sin. We say we love you but hate our brother and sister. You call us to minister to Ethiopian eunuchs, but we turn them away. We focus on getting for ourselves and claim we are bearing fruit. We try to cut others off the vine, even though we are not the vine grower.

For the sake of Christ, forgive us. Strengthen us. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Good News! Because of Christ, God forgives your sins, all of them. The Spirit strengthens you to bear fruit. Yes!

Prayer of Inspiration

Spirit, through the Word, open our eyes, so that we can guide others.

Prayers of the People

We exalt you for the Church. We are never alone, never detached. You make us all branches, equal. That we may live like the branches we are, we ask you, (congregational response: guide us.).

Grateful for leaders such as Julian of Norwich and Nicolaus Zinzendorf, we praise you. Help us to be more like them. We ask you, . . .

Omni-embracing Adonai, you welcomed the Ethiopian eunuch. Enlarge our capacity to embrace outsiders, such as people society has abused and then ostracized. Teach us to include the excluded. We beg you, . . .

You are the God of people of all sexual orientations. We praise you for people of every type, male, female, and transgendered. Lead us to value each person. We pray to you, . . .

You are the healer. Care for everyone in need [Add names.], and magnify our ability to be your agents of healing. We pray to you, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

We know you do not forsake us but answer our prayers according to your love. In the name of Christ we praise. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

We offer sacrifices of thanksgiving to you, O LORD.

Benediction

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, helps us grow.

People: We celebrate the Resurrection by bearing fruit. Alleluia!

Fourth Sunday of Easter, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Alleluia! The Risen Christ is the Good Shepherd.

People: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is with us all the days our lives.

Leader: Our Savior prepares a table before us.

People: We will dwell in the house of the LORD forevermore. Alleluia!

Invocation

God, through Death Valley you have led us to the empty tomb. Yes! Renew our dedication to obeying your commandments, that we may abide in Christ and Christ in us. In the Savior’s name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Cornerstone Adonai, we sin against you. We listen to the wrong voices, those of wolves, instead of to your voice. We wander into briar patches. We think we can do everything ourselves without you or the guidance of the rest of the flock. We are as fair-weather as a hired hand. We think we get to decide who is in the flock.

For the sake of the Shepherd Lamb, forgive us. Seek and rescue us. Yes.

Words of Assurance

Alleluia, Christ is risen! The Lamb was slain. The Shepherd has found us. Through the Blood, God forgives you all your sins. We shall not want. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Holy Spirit, as you filled Peter to preach the Good News, fill us, that each of us may hear and preach the Good News every hour of the week.

Prayers of the People

We thank you, God, for leading the Church for two-thousand years. We are grateful for apostles such as Philip and James; bishops such as Athanasius; and leaders such as Catherine of Siena and Monica. Green pasture-Lord, (congregational response: your voice heals us.).

We exalt you for the United States and all of your magnificent creation. Bless President Obama and each one of us, that we may take better care of your world, including people in need. Green pasture-Lord, . . .

We praise you, Adonai, for healing us. Put your arms around everyone in need of healing [Add names], and direct us in how to care for others. Green-pasture Lord, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

These prayers we give to you, thankful that you give to us compassionate, wise responses. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Accept our gifts, O Lord, for the healing of the nations.

Benediction

Leader: The Everlasting Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, lead and protect us with rod and staff.

People: We follow your voice, answering the call to live the Resurrection. Alleluia!

Third Sunday of Easter, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: The risen Christ comes to us and says, “Peace be with you.”

People: The Triune God, Father, Son, and Spirit, emboldens us to live the Resurrection.

Leader: Alleluia! Christ suffered and then rose from the dead on the third day.

Prayer of Confession

Adonai, how eager we are to sin. We chase after vain lies and bow to idols of plastic and metal. We are full of pessimism, saying, “Who will show us some good?”, as if you are ineffective. We embrace lawlessness, confusing it with freedom. We let Easter fade, Good Friday recede to the background of our lives.

We repent and turn to you, so that our sins may be wiped out. For the sake of the Resurrection Lord, forgive us. Lead us again to the empty tomb. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Alleluia, Christ is alive! Jesus was revealed to take away sins. We are God’s children. All your sins are forgiven, gone, forgotten, because I AM endured the cross. Alleluia!

Prayer of Inspiration

Open our minds to understand the scriptures. Yes.

Prayers of the People

That we may eat with and believe in Christ, we pray to you, (congregational response: God of Resurrection.).

Excited and curious about what we will become, we praise you, . . .

Grateful for your magnificent planet and striving to take better care of it, we pray to you, . . .

That we may persist in celebrating Easter no matter how cynical people around us become, we pray to you, . . .

That our nation, the United States, may be a model of protecting non-human nature, we pray to you, . . .

Trusting that you will help all those in need we mention now [Add names], we pray to you, . . .

In awe of the multitude of wonderful church leaders from throughout history, including the evangelist Mark, we praise you, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Take all these prayers and change them into that which honors you and helps to improve the conditions of people around the world. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Through our gifts, we rejoice over the Resurrection.

Pastoral Prayer, April 15, 2012
By Rick Brand

Prayers of the People

Silently now, O Gracious God, we turn to Thee. We bow in the midst of the confusion that always besets us.  We bow in the midst of a world that is always contentious, the clamor and noise of the struggle is always around us.  Nations and cultures pushing and shoving each other for pride, place and power.  Celebrities, Pro, CEO’s and politicians all jockeying for promenance, place, and wealth. We are buffetted about by the different visions of life and the different pathsways to happiness and well being. Silently now, O Lord, we turn to Thee to listen for the wisdom of Thy love. We give thanks for all of the varieties of blessings and gifts that come to us as people in this land. We give thanks for the strong impact of religious ideals and virtues in the creation and guiding of this nation. We rejoice in the life of Jesus Christ who showed us Thy love and gave us the vision of the human life at its best. We give thanks for those who have studied the Word, who have written the hymns, who have taught us the story, who have lived as witnesses of the faith so that we might see and know the power of Thy grace. We give thanks for all who want to live together in that strange and wonderful world of the Kingdom of God.

As we pray for Thy blessing upon us that we may be more and more like Jesus our Lord, we pray more and more for the world around us and for others. We pray for the creation in which we live. We pray for the wisdom to understand better how to care for Thy good creation. We pray for the people of the world, and we pray that we may work harder at the understanding of differences so that we may live with others in peace.  We pray for all of those places where guns and canons fire, and rockets are launched, and homes are bombed, and people’s lives are changed and destroyed. We pray for the soldiers whose lives are forever changed by the combat and we pray for the countries in which they fight.

We pray for the millions who are unemployed and underemployed. We pray for the millions who have more money than they know what to do with and thus do shameful things.  We pray for teachers and for students, for all of us as we constantly need to be learning and changing with so much around us. We pray for the sick, the injured, the hospitalized, the confused, the angry, the desperate, the tired, the lonely, the  ignored, the weary, the bored, the suicidal, the jailed, and all of us who carry more burdens than our neighbors know. Be Thou are rock and our salvation. Come in hope and love, come in the miracle of a hand of friendship from another, come in the discover of a way out by another, come in a surprise of a better day, come in healing of the body and the mind for we pray the blessings of Christ upon all of us.

Hear us now as we pray as Christ taught us to pray......
