By David von Schlichten

August 19, 2012

Proper 15

Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost, Year B

Call to Worship

Leader: Wisdom calls, “Come, eat of my bread!”

People: Jesus calls, “Come, eat of my flesh!”

Leader: The Three-in-One fills us so that we can live thanksgiving. Yes!

Invocation

Sophia-Spirit, sober us, wake us up. Teach us to sing gratitude to God at all times by feeding the Bread to the hungry. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

Lord, we have sinned against you. We follow Woman Foolishness instead of Woman Wisdom. We’d rather fill up on spiritual junk food than the Bread. We stumble around drunk, barely awake, missing your grace. We’re heavy on complaining and light on thanking.

For the sake of the Savior, forgive us. Amen.

Words of Assurance

Good news! God forgives you all your sins. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Prayer of Inspiration

Spirit, through the Word, fill us. Yes.

Prayers of the People

Teacher, we praise you for the Church. We are in awe of wise leaders such as the apostle Bartholomew and Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux. Sophia-God, (congregational response: teach us to walk in the way of insight.).

Mother-Rabbi, we thank you for our nation, for the human race, and for all of your stunning creation. Bless our leaders. Watch over soldiers on all sides of the battlefield. Guide us to labor for peace and to be more loving toward the non-human part of the world. Sophia-God, . . .

Many of us stumble through life, drunk or asleep. We numb ourselves. Sober us. Revive us. Grant us the courage to break free from lives of quiet desperation and instead to sing the song that you have put inside us. Sophia-God, . . .

We thank you for healing us. Touch with healing all those in need, including everyone we mention [Add names.]. Sophia-God, . . .

You may add other praises and petitions here.

Thank you for hearing and answering us. In the name of Christ we praise. Amen.

Offertory Prayer

Receive our sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Benediction

Leader: God, Father, Son, and Spirit, has nourished us and now sends us.

People: Lead us, Wisdom, as we strive to feed the starving. Yes.

Abundance-Adonai, we praise you for your holy nourishment. Continue to strengthen us to be your athletes of your love. In the name of the Savior we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

You are with us in the wilderness, but we continue to sin. We don’t trust you to care for us. We fail to appreciate the present, yearning for a romanticized past. You offer us bread, but we crave spiritual junk food. We behave childishly, the latest trend easily swaying us away from you.

Prayer of Confession

How often we sin against you, Mother. We doubt your power. We fail to give to you, thinking that our tiny amount cannot make a difference. You root us and seek to strengthen us, but we resist. You want to nourish us with delicious wisdom, yet we would rather get sick on spiritual and intellectual junk-food.

God, your heart breaks with love for us, yet we wander away from you. Although we are citizens under your rule, we live as if we were our own rulers. You call us, but we do not follow.
